The Interregional Cooperation Programme INTERREG IVC, financed by the European Union’s Regional Development Fund, helps Regions of Europe work together to share experience and good practice in the areas of innovation, the knowledge economy, the environment and risk prevention. EUR 302 million is available for project funding but, more than that, a wealth of knowledge and potential solutions are also on hand for regional policy-makers.

Velika Polana

The Municipality of Velika Polana is located in the north-eastern part of Slovenia, in an area characterised by a variety of lowland grasslands, woods, fields and many villages. This region used to be rich in small crafts and ceramics.

One of the main focuses of the municipality has been lately teh revival of this sector by various means. Therefore, together with neighbouring municipalities it has established Pomelaj, Developmental Cooperative.

This brought along a comprehensive model of rural development that brings together rural inhabitants’ interests on the one hand and initiatives from the communities, developmental agencies and other development stakeholders on the other. Pomelaj operates in the field of revival and preservation of local knowledge and local hand skills, and promotion of these skills and professions as potential way of living and money earning (entrepreneurship) in rural areas.

Velika Polana has a wide natural and cultural heritage. It hosts a unique cottage industry, which is specialised on products made from natural materials, like softwood. It is also an officially designated stork village, has a renovated pre-industrial mill and is home to many protected and endangered species of plants and animals.
