The Interregional Cooperation Programme INTERREG IVC, financed by the European Union’s Regional Development Fund, helps Regions of Europe work together to share experience and good practice in the areas of innovation, the knowledge economy, the environment and risk prevention. EUR 302 million is available for project funding but, more than that, a wealth of knowledge and potential solutions are also on hand for regional policy-makers.

The Peneda-Gerês National Park (PNPG) is one of the emblematic Portuguese tourist destinations thanks to the diversity of landscape, a rurality marked by unique archaic elements and the traditional bonhomie with which the local populations welcome visitors.

The PNPG, the first of the protected areas to be created (in 1971), is the only one with the status of National Park. It covers an area of around 70 000 hectare and  consists of five municipalities. Since 1997 it has been combined with the Galician Parque Natural da Baixa Limia - Serra do Xurés to form the Gerês-Xurés Cross-Frontier Park, which covers an area of 91 000 hectares..

In economic terms, small crafts have always been the most important source of living in the area. The dominant activities are livestock farming, crafting and grazing. Indigenous breeds are also an important source of income. Closely linked to the livestock farming is forestry work: people forage an assortment of essential commodities like firewood, timber, and the scrub for animal bedding. Bee-keeping and making smoked meat products are traditional pursuits which still hold great importance in the National Park today. On the other hand, activities such as weaving and basket making have had greater difficulty recently with withstanding the competition of industrial products, and the number of craftsmen preserving these arts has been dwindling.

Therefore the main aim of PNPG is the enhancement and promotion of small crafts, so that they can carry on providing a living for all those involved.
